For the week ending September 6, 2003
Matt Wolin
Men's Soccer
Matt Wolin was chosen as the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a gutsy performance in the Vikings season opener. Wolin, a sophomore midfielder from Highland Park, Ill., earned the honor after filling in at goalkeeper against Benedictine University. With starting goalkeeper Chris Perry unable to play, Wolin was a last-minute replacement. He allowed two goals but made eight saves, including stops on a pair of one-on-one breakaways. Wolin's heroics allowed Lawrence to forge a 2-2 tie with Benedictine.
Abby Birling
Women's Tennis
Abby Birling has tasted defeat just once since the season began and helped Lawrence to a 4-1 record. Birling, a senior from Appleton, has teamed with two different partners to go 5-0 in at No. 2 doubles. Birling and partner Claire Mallory won Lawrence's only point in an 8-1 loss to UW-River Falls on Saturday. In singles, Birling defeated Kathyrn Wunnicke of Edgewood 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4, beat Kristin Minelli of Marian 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, and stopped Sarah Plovanich of Dominican (Ill.) 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Her only loss was a 6-2, 6-1, loss to Becky Briese of River Falls at No. 5. In games played, she is 39-8 in singles and she is 40-19 in doubles.
