For the week ending September 13, 2003
Rodrigo Gomes
Men's Soccer
Rodrigo Gomes scored his first collegiate goals this past week, and he did it in spectacular fashion. Gomes, a freshman forward from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was also named the Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week. Led by Gomes and goalkeeper Chris Perry, who was the conference's Defensive Performer of the Week, the Vikings went 2-1. Gomes scored Lawrence's first goal in a 4-0 win at Clarke College on Sept. 9. Gomes then scored a pair of stunning goals in Lawrence's 2-0 win over St. Olaf College. Gomes hammered a shot from 30 yards out to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the first half. With less than five minutes remaining, Gomes sealed the win for the Vikings when he blasted a half-volley past the St. Olaf goalkeeper.
Courtney Miller
Women's Cross Country
Courtney Miller turned in a stellar performance this past Saturday in her second meet of the season. Miller, a senior from Reston, Va., led the Vikings by running to second place at the Concordia (Wis.) University Invitational. She turned in a time of 20 minutes, 3 seconds, over the 5,000-meters, and was named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week. Paced by Miller, a former All-Midwest Conference runner, the Vikings took third place in the 21-team meet.
