Men's Golf
The Lawrence University golf team captured the Midwest Conference championship this past Saturday. The Vikings hadn't won a conference title since 1949 but solid play throughout the squad led Lawrence to a two-shot victory over Knox College. Lawrence shot a team score of 313 in the final round of the MWC Championships on the par-72 layout at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill., to go with the 322 it shot on Friday for a winning score of 635. Lawrence was one shot off the lead of Monmouth College after Friday's first round, and the Vikings had three individuals all shoot 77 in the final round to propel them to the title. Junior Joe Loehnis, junior Markus Specks and junior Andy Link all shot 77 on Saturday and all earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top 10. Loehnis was fifth with a 36-hole score of 157, Specks was tied for sixth at 158 and Link tied for ninth at 160. Senior Blake Nelson tied for 13th with a 36-hole score of 162, and senior Jeff Henderson was 18th with a score of 163. Sophomore Ryan Knox tied for 33rd with a score of 173. This is Lawrence's fifth conference golf championship, adding to titles won in 1942, 1946, 1948, and 1949. Lawrence is the first Wisconsin team to win the Midwest Conference championship since Beloit College took the title in 1962.
