Week of September 19-25, 2005
Football Team
The Lawrence University football team gets the honor after beating Carroll
College 38-36 in dramatic fashion in the Banta Bowl. The Vikings scored the
go-ahead touchdown with 59 seconds left in the game, and P.J. Hilbert then
blocked what could have been a game-winning field goal as time expired to
preserve the victory. Hilbert, who also blocked an extra point earlier in
the game, was named the Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week
and earned a spot on the D3football.com national Team of the Week. Quarterback
Eric Aspenson, who scored what proved to be the winning touchdown, was 20
of 32 passing for 201 yards and a touchdown. He also had 115 rushing yards
and scored two touchdowns on the ground. Wide receiver Nick Korn hit career
highs with 14 catches and 164 receiving yards. His 14 catches matches Sal
Cianciola (vs. Ripon 1953) for the second-best game total in school history.
Running back Craig Ebert drove the offense with 32 carries for 140 yards and
two touchdowns. On defense, safety Joe Austin had a team-high nine tackles,
including three for loss and a sack, and forced a fumble. He was named the
Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Cornerback Marshall McGhee
also had his first career interception.
