Women's Tennis
Susan Klumpner and Serene Sahar won the first Midwest Conference doubles championship for the Lawrence University women's tennis team since 1988. That long streak without a title ended on Saturday night at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison when Klumpner (Downers Grove, Ill./South H.S.) and Sahar (New Berlin/Eisenhower) took the crown at No. 2 doubles at the MWC Championships. The Lawrence duo defeated Brittany Richardson and Jaime Jackson of Lake Forest College 7-5, 6-3 in the championship match. The last Lawrence doubles teams to wins league titles were Anita Salzberger and Krin Ringel, who won at No. 1, and Caran Frater and Kathy Harris, who took the title at No. 2, both in 1988. It was Lawrence's first league championship of any kind since Anne Lundberg took the No. 4 singles title in 1992. Klumpner and Sahar received a bye in the first round and then defeated Kara Wagner and Arielle Denis of Ripon college 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Klumpner and Sahar beat Monmouth College's Sara Yerks and Holly Trotter 6-3, 6-4. Sahar and Klumpner finished the season with a 15-3 record.
