Men's Basketball
Ryan Kroeger put on a shooting display in Lawrence's 80-64 win against rival Ripon on Jan. 12. The junior guard from Glendale, Wis., hit 6 of 7 shots from the floor, including 5-for-5 from 3-point range on his way to a game-high 24 points. He did it while playing only 21 minutes, as Lawrence played 18 players in the victory. Kroeger hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half and give Lawrence an 11-point advantage at the break. He then drilled another 3-pointer in the first minute of the second half that put the Vikings up by 16, and Ripon never got closer than 11 points after that. On the season, Kroeger is averaging 17.4 points per game while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor, including 56.1 percent on 3-pointers.
Jack Peters
Wrestling
Jack Peters placed in his second consecutive tournament with a second-place finish at the North Central College Invitational on Jan. 12. The senior from Shiocton, Wis., got a bye in the first round and then pinned Jon Waggy of Wilmington in 5:04 in the quarterfinals. It was Peters' team-leading sixth pin of the season. Peters then dominated Elmhurst's Bob Hohn 13-6 in the semifinals. He missed the title with a 10-0 loss to Adam Schultz of Concordia (Wis.) in the title match. Peters also grabbed fourth place at the Sunshine Open in Lakeland, Fla., on Dec. 28-29. He posted a 4-2 record at the Sunshine Open and picked up a pair of pins. Peters improved his record to 12-6 on the season.
Hayley Vatch
Women's Swimming
Hayley Vatch won two events and swam on a second-place relay team in Lawrence's dual meet with UW-Whitewater on Jan. 12. The junior from Elmhurst, Ill., won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.98 and took first place in the 1,650 freestyle in 18:28.94. She swam the opening leg of the 400 relay team, which placed second in 3:54.84. Vatch, who was named the Midwest Conference Swimmer of the Week, posted the fastest time in the league in the 1,650 freestyle, and the 500 freestyle time is the third-fastest in the conference.
