Adam Ferguson won his first collegiate title this on April 19 at Glen Erin Golf Club when he carded a 3-over par 74 at the Beloit Invitational. Ferguson, who was named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week, tied the low round for the Lawrence team for the season and led the Vikings to second place in the team standings. The sophomore from Sydney, Nova Scotia, has now carded a 74 three times this season. Ferguson followed that up by shooting 75 in the first round of the Carroll Invitational on April 20 at the Broadlands and then shot an 86 on April 21 at Bristlecone Pines to tie for 14th place.
Dan Hertel
Men's Tennis
Dan Hertel went undefeated in singles and doubles this past week and helped Lawrence earn its first berth in the Midwest Conference Team Championship since 2003. The junior from Sheboygan, Wis., went 3-0 at No. 3 singles and teamed with Ryan Dunn to go 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. Hertel, who was named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week, improved to 9-7 in singles and 11-3 in doubles. Hertel provided the winning point in Lawrence's 5-4 victory over Ripon on April 18, and he did it in dramatic fashion. After losing the first set 6-1 to Ben Sweeney at No. 3 singles, Hertel won the second set 6-2. Hertel then trailed 5-1 in the third set but rallied to tie the match at 6-6. He then won the tiebreaker 7-5 to give Lawrence the victory. He teamed with Dunn to beat Sweeney and Dave Czarnecki 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. In an 8-1 win over Beloit on April 19, Hertel beat Matt Aslesen 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. In a 7-2 win over Carroll on April 20, Hertel beat John Krewer 6-0, 6-3 in singles and posted an 8-4 win in doubles.
