Peter Brengel
Swimming

Peter Brengel posted a trio of top-three individual finishes and swam on four relay teams that broke school records at the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell on Feb. 18-20. The junior from Milwaukee, Wis., took second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.60 seconds and took second in the 200 backstroke in 1:53.54, which actually broke the existing meet record. Brengel also grabbed third in the 100 backstroke in 52.73 seconds. Brengel was part of the 200 freestyle relay team (1:26.37), the 400 freestyle relay team (3:11.81), 200 medley relay team (1:36.18) and 400 medley relay team (3:32.96), which all broke school records.

Hannah Gabriel
Swimming

Hannah Gabriel won an individual title and broke a meet record at the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell on Feb. 18-20. The freshman from Elmhurst, Ill., won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.89 to claim her first conference championship. She broke the record of former Lawrence star Hayley Vatch, who set the mark of 1:57.03 in 2009. Gabriel also took second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:11.84 and was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:17.76. Gabriel also swam on the 800 freestyle relay team, which placed second, the third-place 400 freestyle relay team and the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Nick Kerkman
Track and Field

Nick Kerkman broke the Lawrence record in the weight throw at the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational on Feb. 19. The junior from Mequon, Wis., posted a throw of 48 feet, 8 inches, to break Mike Pierquet’s record of 45-7.75. Kerkman, who was chosen as the Midwest Conference Field Performer of the Week, was honored by the conference for the first time in his career. This is Kerkman's second school record. He set the mark in the hammer throw in 2010.
