Week of August 30-September 5, 2010
Curran Carlile
Cross Country
In his first collegiate race, Curran Carlile was a winner at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational. The freshman from Portland, Ore., covered the four-mile course at Colburn Park in 20 minutes, 50.1 seconds, and was named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week. Led by Carlile, the Vikings tied for the team title with 66 points. Carlile's victory was the first by a Lawrence men's runner since Eric Davis won the Northland Baptist Bible College Invitational in 2001. The team victory also was the first since the Northland Baptist meet in 2001.
Beth Larson
Women's Tennis
Beth Larson was perfect during the opening week of action and knocked off the Midwest Conference's defending No. 1 singles champion. The junior from Maplewood, Minn., was 3-0 on the week at No. 1 singles and teamed with Jenny Roesch to go 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. Larson, who was named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week, capped her week with a 6-0, 7-6 victory over Lake Forest's Melika Celebic, who won the conference’s top singles title in 2009. Led by Larson, the Vikings defeated the Foresters 7-2. Larson posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in singles in Lawrence’s 9-0 win over Marian. She also won 6-0, 6-2 in singles in Lawrence's 5-4 victory over Edgewood, the defending Northern Athletics Conference champion.
Sam Wagner
Football
Sam Wagner didn’t wait long to make an impact on his college football team. The first time Wagner ever touched a ball in a collegiate game, he returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. In Lawrence's 31-24 loss at St. Scholastica on Sept. 4, the freshman slotback from Salem, Wis., returned a kickoff early in the first quarter to give the Vikings a 7-3 lead. In 107 seasons of Lawrence football, it is believed Wagner is the first freshman to return a kickoff for a touchdown the first time he ever touched the ball. Wagner, who was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and was chosen as the Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass and finished with six catches for 69 yards.
