The course will emphasize experiential learning. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Fall 2026: Introduction to Visual Culture PREREQUISITES: None This seminar introduces students to the study of visual culture, looking each week at different visual objects and questions. Visual Culture (or sometime, Visual Studies) is a discipline that draws from Art History, Film Studies, Media Studies, and other fields in order to address questions that these fields themselves do not address. So, over the course of the term, we will tackle questions like: What is an image? What is the role of media and technology in visual culture? What differentiates “art” in the visual sphere? What is vision? Do the ways in which humans look at the world change over time? Students will complete regular readings, responses, and creative assignments with critical reflections in order to grapple with these questions.

This discussion-based course focuses on Russian and Soviet animation: its topics, artistic techniques, and cultural significance. Animators explored topics that were both deeply personal and rooted in important historical events. Animated films were sometimes a creative outlet not supported by the state, and sometimes used by the state as propaganda. We will discuss animation’s ability to serve various functions while appealing to different audiences.

In this course students make projects that engage with space. With its pivotal role in the inauguration of the cinema, knowledge of German film is critical to an understanding of the history of film. Throughout this course, students will be introduced to the practice of reading German films using three structuring lenses: 1) cultural history and identity, 2) genre and style, and 3) analysis and interpretation. Topics include colonial film, Expressionism, early LGBTQ cinema, fascism, postwar film in East and West Germany, cinema and migration.

Description:

This course will examine topics in Russian film. Topics may include specific genres (e.g. the sad comedy), the work of a director or tradition, films important for a specific historical moment (e.g. the Thaw or World War Two), or films devoted to a specific theme. Students will expand their Russian vocabulary, improve fluency, increase speaking confidence and gain cultural knowledge by viewing Russian films and analyzing the psychology of the characters. Throughout this course, students will be introduced to the practice of reading the filmic text using three structuring lenses: 1) history, 2) formal and generic elements, and 3) film criticism. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Fall 2026: Love, Sex and Family in Late Soviet and Post-Soviet Film PREREQUISITES: RUSS 250 or consent of instructor In this course, we will discuss topics of love, sex, and family as they are shown in a few late Soviet and post-Soviet films (e.g., Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, Autumn Marathon, How I Became a Russian, etc.). Topics for discussion include falling in love, searching for a partner, getting married, building a family, and various aspects of a relationship (love, sex, trust, adultery). These films will give us a glimpse into the late Soviet, post-Soviet, and contemporary Russian culture of relationships and family. Students will advance their listening, speaking, and writing skills and enrich their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar through regular writing assignments and in-class exercises and discussions.

This seminar will familiarize students with major topics within contemporary theories of Blackness and race, including the afterlives of slavery, afro-pessimism, prison abolitionism, and racial capitalism. A survey of 20th-century Chinese fiction and cinema. Iconoclastic works of modern Chinese vernacular fiction from 1919 through the post-Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) will be juxtaposed alongside films dealing with the same period, such as Red Sorghum (1987) and Farewell, My Concubine (1992) made by the so-called Fifth Generation of film directors (born after 1949, when the People’s Republic was founded).
