| Description: | This course explores the history of New Orleans from the colonial era to the present. Students will investigate the multiple racial and ethnic histories of identity construction that make New Orleans so significant to American culture today. Tracing identity constructions across the course of three centuries will allow us to understand some of the stakes in contested racialized categories and linguistic policies and practices today. The course explores the dominant tropes in New Orleans history: race, sex, carnival, jazz, prostitution, slavery, free people of color, and the environment.
