Topic for Spring 2021: Politics of Sports in the Modern World
This course provides critical historical perspective on sport in the modern world. On the one hand, sport has brought disparate humans around the world together through simultaneous shared experience, as evidenced by the one-billion people worldwide who watched the 2018 World Cup final. On the other hand, sport has been used to advance a variety of political projects, including those seeking to reinforce “traditional” national, ethno-racial, and gender differences. To understand why sport is so consequential for generating both togetherness and division, we examine sport across different regions from the start of the Industrial Revolution to the present, drawing on historical, sociological, and anthropological materials as well as art and film.
