This course explores the idea of record production as ethnographic work, with a focus on the radical DIY record label Sublime Frequencies, founded by brothers Alan and Richard Bishop in 2003 in Seattle. As members of the punk band Sun City Girls, the Bishops traveled around the world to capture their sonic experiences in urban and rural settings typically regarded as inaccessible to western visitors, exploring places such as Iraq, North Korea, Syria, and Southeast Asia. Students will engage with the Sublime Frequencies catalog through video clips and sound recordings and will critically examine their work through discussion of a collection of essays that consider how the Bishops’ ethical and aesthetic foundations in the American underground, and their uniquely “punk” approach to the academic discipline of ethnomusicology, leads to questions about appropriation, intellectual property, and colonialism, and how these questions are particularly challenging when positioned within our increasingly globalized and digitized twenty-first century.
