Topic for Winter 2013: Illuminated Manuscripts This seminar considers illumniated manuscripts from the European Middle Ages, extending from roughly 400 to 1500 CE. We will explore manuscripts not only as an artistic medium, but also as a form of information technology, interrogating how the visual elements with them -- script, ornament, miniatures, marginalia, and more -- served to enrich readers' understanding and experience of the text. Our sense of the structure and nature of these books will be enriched by encounters with facsimiles and some actual manuscripts. |
