Description: This course is a combination of research and studio practice. Through lectures, readings and discussions the class will survey the history of ceramics with the goal of informing the studio work for the course. Students will engage in independent research to develop ideas and critical thinking as well as building on a variety of ceramic skills to create a personal body of work.

Topic for Spring 2013: Ceramic Sculpture
This course provides students with the opportunity to learn about historical and contemporary approaches to ceramic sculpture as well as the influence of history, tradition and material on its development. The course explores the historical ceramic traditions of Latin America and Asia, the redefinition of ceramics as a sculptural material in the 20th Century and contemporary sculptural approaches with clay. Students will learn how these movements and influences relate to making ceramic sculpture using hand building and slip casting techniques.
