Itanium® Architecture for Programmers

Client Configurations

Remote access software

Information about secure access software for various platforms is available from the OpenSSH portion of the OpenBSD Project. Most managers of remotely accessed systems now require secure access methods that do not transmit passwords over the internet in clear text, e.g., equivalents of the Unix command line utilities: ssh instead of rlogin and telnet, and sftp or scp instead of ftp.

Windows clients

The freeware PuTTY provides secure shell capabilities (SSH1 and the more secure SSH2), including both interactive sessions and file transfers for Win32 systems.

Tera Term, a freeware telnet access client for Windows. The final version, for Win 95/NT, can be downloaded here (943,746 bytes).

The freeware TTSSH Extensions by Robert O'Callahan provide secure shell (SSH1 only) capabilities for Tera Term. More of the author's original documentation has been preserved here. Further documentation from Brandeis University can be accessed here. The software itself can be downloaded here (268 KiB).

OpenSSH on Windows provides a freeware command-line secure ftp client that can be downloaded here (2410307 bytes).

Macintosh clients

As Mac OS X is BSD-based, the Terminal application provides all of the standard Unix-like command line communication tools, in particular the secure variants.

MacSFTP, a shareware ftp client for both Mac OS Classic and OS X with SSH1 and SSH2 capability by Jean-Pierre Stierlin, can be downloaded (807 KiB).

Fetch is an ftp client; version 3.0.3 (1.2 MiB) is still free; newer versions are commercial, but free educational licenses may be available; the newest versions support sftp.

BetterTelnet, a free telnet client for Mac OS Classic only, and its manual can be downloaded here; there have also been adaptations of it that offer secure features.

MacSSH, a freeware variant of BetterTelnet with SSH2 capability for Mac OS Classic only by Jean-Pierre Stierlin, can be downloaded (538 KiB).

NiftyTelnet SSH, a freeware telnet client for Mac OS Classic only by Jonas Waldén, can also transfer files using secure copy (SCP) and can be downloaded here (560 KiB)

Linux clients

Portable OpenSSH is a source of secure client software for Linux (and Unix) environments. Linux distributions typically support all of the standard Unix-like command line communication tools, in particular the secure variants.

Programmer's text editors

Windows

Programmer's File Editor (PFE) by Alan Phillips, a Windows client program with capabilities similar to BBEdit for Macintosh, can be downloaded here (621980 bytes)

jEdit is an open-source Java-based programmer’s text editor that can be downloaded for various current operating systems.

Macintosh

mi (formerly known as MMKEdit) is a freeware editor with many of the features and capabilities of PFE for Windows.

TextWrangler, introduced as a commercial product but now available as a free download, offers much of the functionality of the commercial BBEdit editor by Bare Bones Software. There is a universal binary for PowerPPC and Intel processors.

jEdit is an open-source Java-based programmer’s text editor that can be downloaded for various current operating systems.
