Scenic Door County is a favorite of cyclists in Wisconsin
For this tour I planned a three day excursion, which included two days to ride up to Sister Bay and a day spent exploring Washington Island.
Day | Route | Distance |
---|---|---|
One | Appleton to Algoma via Green Bay | 69 miles |
Two | Green Bay to Sister Bay via Sturgeon Bay | 58 miles |
Three | Loop around Washington Island | 18 miles |
My distination on day one was the town of Algoma, which sits on the Lake Michigan shore.
The Fox River Trail is an excellent bike trail that runs up into downtown Green Bay. This made the trip up to Green Bay very pleasant. After lunch in Green Bay I set out across County Road K to Algoma.
Most of the routes through Door County hug the western or the eastern edge of the peninsula. The less heavily traveled western route is a favorite of cyclists.
With the mist rolling in off Lake Michigan I rode County Road S along the shore of the lake toward Sturgeon Bay. After a quick stop to pick up a sandwich in Sturgeon Bay, I rode County Road B along the western edge of Door County. I stopped for a picnic lunch in Peninsula State Park. After lunch I rode through the park and on toward Sister Bay in pouring rain.
My wife drove up to meet me in Sister Bay, and the next day we packed up our bikes and headed for the ferry to Washington Island.
We left our car at the ferry landing and took the ferry over to the island with our bikes. Riding around the island by bike is one of the best ways to experience the island.
