ICPSR - LU info
Overview Lawrence is a member of Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). LU faculty and students may access the data directly. ICPSR data are to be used solely for statistical analysis and reporting of aggregated information, and not for the investigation of specific individuals or organizations. Additionally, ICPSR data may not be distributed to others outside the university. ICPSR data may be put on any medium locally as long as they are accessible only to university faculty, students, and staff.
ICPSR is
a membership-based organization which collects data from individual
researchers, polling agencies, and governmental and international
agencies. Its purpose
is to maximize the availability and utilization of data resources
by obtaining data and the technical documentation needed to access
them for redistribution
to its membership. Lawrence's membership in ICPSR allows all LU
researchers to use ICPSR resources free of charge.
ICPSR Direct To download data, go to the ICPSR webpage at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ and search for a dataset. When you select a study and choose "download," you will see a policy statement that describes the appropriate uses of ICPSR data and Lawrence's policy for downloading. You will also be asked for your email address and information about your Lawrence affiliation. After that, you're authorized to download data directly to your desktop. ICPSR Direct works if you are using an on-campus computer.
Lab Facilities SPSS and unzip software (7-zip) are installed
in the Statistics, Economics, Psychology-Anthropology labs, and
in the residence hall labs. Students
can download data to their
personal network space and then unzip compressed files from there. Faculty may request share space on the network for class projects.
Codebooks are usually available in pdf format. They can be used online,
or useful sections can be printed.
