First Paper Assignment (Due October 21)
Please choose one of the following topics for your 4-5 page paper:
1) "The post-World War One peace settlement was an example of the successful implementation of the principle of national self-determination in Eastern Europe."
Respond to this statement in one of two ways: a) Agree or disagree; or b) Deny that this is an important question for examining East-European History between the two world wars. In answering, be sure that you make your understanding of "self-determination" clear. Your answer should consider at least three of the six countries we have focused on (Poland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria). If you choose the first option, you may choose to agree with respect to some countries and not others, but then your answer should nevertheless draw general conclusions.
2) "The Habsburg monarchy collapsed because of the nationalism of its subject peoples."
Agree or disagree with this statement. In answering, make sure that your understanding of "nationalism" is clear to the reader. Your answer should consider the national ideologies and social structures of at least four of the following peoples: Germans, Hungarians, Poles, Croats, Serbs, Czechs, Slovaks, and Romanians. Keep in mind that you must produce a coherent essay, not merely a list of facts about the peoples in question.
3) Ivan Berénd contends that "the historical alternative to Bolshevik and populist dictatorships in postwar Central and Eastern Europe was not Western-type democracy but ‘white’ terror and conservative autocracy" (Berend 139). Agree or disagree with Berend’s statement, being sure to explain both his reasoning and your own. Whether you agree or disagree with Berend, you should be sure to consider any exceptions to his argument. Your answer should demonstrate a familiarity with several countries covered in the course.
