- Don't expect things to happen quickly.
- Set sights high, perhaps even a bit unrealistically so.
- Give attention to the entire departmental program.
- Make sure the department has a few ``selling'' points.
- Provide opportunities for regular student involvement in
departmental affairs.
- Arrange for students to interact with visiting scientists in the
absence of faculty.
- Consciously nurture challenging but supportive relationships among
students and between students and faculty members.
- Strive for flexibility in the curriculum.
- Approach outside agencies frequently and aggressively.
- Provide adequate space for entire program, including space
for students to claim as their own.
- Develop effective strategies for recruiting students.
- Aim at targets with high probability of paying off.
- Strive for student involvement in scholarship during the year and in the
summers.
- Make sure development plan has support of all key players.
