Paper Assignment #1: Faulkner's As I Lay Dying

In one typed page, discuss one of the first eight chapters of As I Lay Dying, telling what the chapter reveals about the character who is narrating it. Feel free to focus on any issues that you find interesting, but please give some attention to the narrator's feelings about other characters in the novel.

Format:

The first draft of this paper will be due at class time on Friday, September 24. I will return the papers on Monday, September 27--with comments, but no grade. Don't be alarmed. This paper is one of the two that is required to be rewritten, and your rewrite will be (I am sure) improved and worthy of a higher grade.

Outside my office door (Main Hall G2) there will be a signup sheet for half-hour "paper conferences" on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of next week. Again, don't be alarmed. Sign up for a time that fits your schedule. During the conference, we'll discuss your paper and ways to improve it (assuming it can be improved). I encourage you to visit the Writing Lab and talk with one of the tutors. The tutors are excellent writers with lots of experience writing college papers and in helping others to write more clearly, confidently, persuasively. Writing Lab tutors are your friends; make good use of them.

The rewrite of the paper will be due at class time on Friday, October 1.

"The simplest definition of a good writer is that he has something to say, and that he has learned how to say it so he can be understood.” – Robert J. Hastings, How I Write
