Paper Assignment #2: Kurosawa's Rashomon

Write a 1-2 page essay in which you identify one way in which the Kurosawa film and the Akutagawa stories ("Rashomon" and "In a Grove") differ significantly from one another, describe the difference you have identified, speculate on Kurosawa's motivation for making such a change, and describe how the impressions given by the story and the film differ because of the change.

Notes:

The paper will be due at class time on Monday, October 11.
The paper should be 1 - 2 pages long, double-spaced.
Your audience for this paper has seen the film and has read the stories. Now they're interested in reading a clear and concise essay about a particular difference between the film and the stories.
A copy of the film is on reserve in the Media Center in the library if you wish to view it again.
