Wednesday, November 17:
- Wrap up Twelfth Night (if we don't finish on Monday).
- Beethoven: for today, listen to the Fifth Symphony at least twice. and read the Historical Background essay (pp 3-16) in your Norton Critical Score.
- Be prepared to talk about the four movements of the symphony: what is each movement like? how do they compare in terms of mood, tempo, pacing...? how are the movements separate? how do they connect?
Friday, November 19:
- Lecture by Bridget Michaele-Reischl and the Lawrence Symphony in the Chapel
Saturday, November 20:
- Attend the Lawrence Symphony's rehearsal on Saturday morning (at a time TBA) or the performance at 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel
Monday, November 22:
- Read the essay by Donald Tovey (pp 143-150) and the review by E.T.A. Hoffmann (pp 150-163).
- Presentations comparing and contrasting the movements.
- Discussion of Friday's lecture, Saturday's performance, and how performances of the same piece can differ.
Wednesday, November 24:
- Starting Chuang Tzu: Basic Writings. For today: have read pp 23-88, but pay particular attention to Section 2, "Discussion on Making All Things Equal," and very particular attention to "the butterfly dream" on page 45.
- See the Chuang Tzu paper assignment.
- Plato paper rewrite due.
Friday, November 26:
- Thanksgiving break: NO CLASS
Monday, November 29:
- For today, reread pp 23-88 and read the rest of the book (pp 89-140).
- Attend the lecture in Stansbury by Professor Vorenkamp of the Religious Studies dept.
Wednesday, December 1:
- We'll discuss Prof. Vorenkamp's lecture and the themes of the work.
Thursday, December 2:
- Chuang Tzu paper due by 4:00 p.m. in my office. This is a change from the original schedule.
Friday, December 3:
- Finish Chuang Tzu
- Talk about the final and the course as a whole.
Tuesday, December 7:
- FINAL EXAM at 8:30 am in Library 401
