GOAL 2: INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM

WLA shall promote the protection of all library materials, regardless of format, from any form of censorship. WLA shall support library and information service personnel, teachers, governing boards, and individuals in defense of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights. WLA shall educate all to the importance of intellectual freedom.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Promote awareness of the principles of intellectual freedom as it applies to access to electronic information available through WISCNET, Internet, and other networks. (WAAL, WASL)

GOAL 3: INFORMATION ACCESS/INFORMATION LITERACY

WLA shall encourage efforts through all types of library and information services to assure every individual access to information at the time needed and in the format the individual can use. WLA shall encourage formal and informal library instructional efforts to teach library use and information access skills to the individual.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Plan program at WLA Program. (All units)
  2. Publish the WAAL Directory and Handbook, with marketing to include non-WAAL members. (WAAL)
  3. Sponsor workshops on access to electronic information and encourage cooperative activities. (WAAL)
  4. Publish and periodically evaluate the Information Literacy Competencies report

GOAL 5: PERSONNEL RESOURCES AND DEVELOPMENT

WLA shall promote the professional development, rights, interests and obligations of library and information agency personnel in order to assure that the people of Wisconsin receive needed library and information services.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Plan unit sponsored programs at WLA's annual conference. (All units)
  2. Publish newsletters. (AWSL, Circulation Section, DSS, ILLRT, MATS, OSRT, RART, RASS, SRRT, WAAL, WAPL, WASL, WISLR, WLTA, YSS)
  3. Produce and publish web pages.
  4. Plan unit conferences. (Circulation Section, RASS, SSS, WAAL, WAPL, WASL, YSS)
  5. Maintain minimum Library-Use Skills Test. (SRRT, WAAL)
  6. Staff networking exchanges for WAAL members. (WAAL)
  7. Increase professional development opportunities for academic support staff.
  8. Encourage student library workers to consider librarianship as a career by sponsoring attendance at the WAAL conferences. (WAAL)
  9. Sponsor summer conferences on topics determined by the WAAL Professional Development Committee. (WAAL)
  10. Continue RASS, SSS and other unit involvement in programs at the WAAL conference. (WAAL)

GOAL 6: LEGISLATION AND FUNDING

WLA shall promote legislation and funding that will strengthen library and information services.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Study the role of academic libraries in potential future multi-type organizations. (WAAL)
  2. Encourage greater awareness of legislative issues and greater involvement in legislative activities by WAAL members through the Library Development and Legislation Committee. (WAAL)

GOAL 7: ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF FUNDING

WLA and its divisions shall provide support for members in their efforts to obtain grants and private donations, such as Friends groups, corporate donations, deferred giving programs, etc.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Develop and promote workshops, training sessions and conference programs on fund raising, Friends groups, grantsmanship, etc. (AWSL, WAAL, WAPL, WASL, WLTA)

GOAL 8: ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT AND VIABILITY

WLA shall practice sound fiscal and management techniques through the ongoing development and implementation of a strategic plan and a financial plan. WLA shall promote membership services and work with other organizations which share common concerns.

Current programs and activities:

  1. Contribute 15% of the profit on all fund raising projects to WLA. (All units)
  2. Provide WLA office staff with information enabling the Office to serve as a front line "reference" for the Association. (All units)
  3. Publish newsletters, directories, handbooks, manuals and web pages to assist and support the WLA membership. (all units)

Objective 8A: Investigate sponsorship of a regional conference of the Association of College and Research Libraries, to be held in Milwaukee. (WAAL, 1998)
