We are listening to a news report full of various reports of Europe going to hell.  For some reason, we are very far away from it in the sunny world of Downer, and it is pleasant.  Hat Hunt boiled down to behind the hockey field, and at 6:05 Marva Nelson found it, amid much mud and decades collection of leaves and even occasional moles.  It was indeed thrilling, and sad, because it is our last Hat Hunt, and even that seemed far away.  We were right there when she found it in some sort of jar.  Exam schedule posted - have three right together, not counting my oral in Spanish.  Then I'll have the rest of that week for job hunting.

As for today, it was sad because it was our last day of classes.  Never to lug a book around, never to sit in chapel with bare legs, and the organ suffocating one, never to slide into class as the bell rings.  What a strange world it will be without the silly academic trappings. ... it will be sad to leave Ann, Martha, Sul, twine, Drummy, Mary, Chris, Kahl, all the swell kids that are the chief attraction of this place.

Then came our last class supper, not particularly sad - it was just fun to be together.  Mary Ruez and I were lured by the Glee Club to the Musicale, and Drummie, Mary Jane, Ben and I saw the Alumna Follies.

9 July 1940

And in West Virginia where we have just spent the long 4th of July weekend.  The silence is hollow, but alive with something indefinable.  We really explored the hills and it is wild, beautiful country, trying hard to erase any imprint of civilization.  I sketched high up on the hill, and this country has a strange aloofness that can't be captured in paint.
