Campus Center Planning Committee

Minutes from February 23, 2006

In attendance:  Peter Bennett, Ken Bozeman, Harold Ginke, Lynn Hagee, Steve Hirby, Joy Jordan, Nathan Litt, Patrick Niles, Paul Shrode, Nancy Truesdell

Minutes from the previous meeting were approved. The group reviewed the schedule and agenda for the upcoming Uihlein-Wilson workshop to be held March 2-3, 2006.

Ken Bozeman and Joy Jordan provided feedback from the Conservatory faculty meeting where ideas about music in the Campus Center were discussed. Faculty raised issues and made comments about acoustics for performances in the Great View Room and the Cinema. In addition, there was discussion about the noise from mechanical systems in the building and whether engineers could work on a way to isolate or eliminate the noise during performances. The Conservatory faculty had a number of broader questions about the Campus Center as well.

Paul Shrode and Ken Bozeman reported on the meeting that occurred with a group of faculty who may use the Cinema in their coursework. It was particularly noteworthy that the discussion group agreed that the Cinema should be a place that is designed for use by students to view films but that classroom use should be considered as well. A number of specific suggestions were made and will be conveyed to the architectural team.

There was a brief review of a preliminary discussion with staff regarding the mailroom, and Steve Hirby provided an overview of decisions reached in a small group discussion about the need for the ID Office to be in the Campus Center.

Peter Bennett, Nathan Litt, and Paul Shrode updated the committee on the discussions that have taken place regarding the Student Activities floor. Students identified two versions of the floor plan, and Uihlein-Wilson is working to show how each version might look.

A catering users group was convened by Lynn Hagee, and a large group of staff from across campus offered suggestions about floor plan layout, food delivery paths, catering staging areas, and room dividing for special events. A meal plan and dining floor discussion with students is scheduled to occur after the committee meeting.

Meeting summaries from all the special sessions will be distributed to committee members.

The committee brainstormed questions for the website’s Frequently Asked Questions section. Steve Hirby will continue to work on the website update.

No meeting next week due to architects’ visit.
