Class 1: Thursday, Sept 25
Course Mechanics: expectations; grading; student teaching logistics
Alignment: introduction of alignment and structural support necessary for singing; suspension system of larynx; Alexander Technique; TMJ concerns; prephonatory tuning of vocal tract (lifted palate, relaxed open throat, tongue forward)
Readings: “Structural Poise,” Bozeman: pp. 1-8.


Class 2: Tuesday, Sept 30
Breathing I: Anatomy & Physiology: the muscles of respiration, their function and
relative contribution to breathing for singing; various strategies of inhalation critiqued; pedagogical goals for respiration summarized.
Readings: Bozeman: “Respiration for Singing,” pp. 9-16b. See Miller. The Structure
of Singing
. Appendix 2: pp. 259-279 as needed


Class 3: Thursday, Oct 2
Breathing II: Respiratory Function: capacities, volumes, recoil, system configuration, pressure management; phonation variables; phonation equation.
Readings: Bozeman: “Respiration for Singing,” pp. 16b-23.

Class 4: Tuesday, Oct 7
Breathing III: Practicum: images, directives, and exercises to induce good alignment,
prephonatory tuning, healthy TMJ function, and efficient inhalation for singing.
Readings: White. “On the Teaching of Breathing for the Singing Voice” from Journal of Voice. Vol. 2., No. 1. pp. 26-29; Bozeman, “Respiration for Singing,” pp. 23-27t.

Class 5: Thursday, Oct 9
Breathing IV: Discussion: “Support”: definition of support; quantitative or qualitative?; physiology of “support”; exercises and strategies; images; “belly in” vs. “belly out” strategies; variation by body type.
Prepare: Support or Breath Management Practicum (on e-reserve).
Test #1 due.


Class 6: Tuesday, Oct 14
Vocal Onset: 3 kinds of onset; 3 modes of phonation; phonation equation revisited; effect of
Bernoulli, inertia, and inertance on phonation; vertical phase difference; use of onset exercises.

Class 7: Thursday, Oct 16
Overview of Singing: head and neck anatomy; vowel and consonant classification; introduction to vibrator, resonator function and acoustics.

Class 8: Tuesday, Oct 21
Anatomy & Physiology of the Larynx: structures; muscles and their function; introduction to vocal registers and registration pedagogy.

Voice Source Acoustics: basic acoustics, voice source spectrum, flow glottogram,
amplitude and closing rate; acoustics of each phonation mode.
