A newsgroup is an online forum in which we can extend and expand our in-class discussions.
To connect to the newsgroup using Netscape:
- Start up Netscape and enter the above URL (line of gibberish beginning "news://...") in the Location Bar (or click on File, then Open Page, then enter the URL).
- This should subscribe you to the newsgroup and open the newsgroup in a new window. If you use Netscape Messenger for email, the newsgroup will appear at the bottom of your list of folders.
To read messages:
- Double-click on the message header. The message will appear in a new message window.
To send a message to the newsgroup:
- Click on New Msg on the toolbar. A standard email-type form will come up. Type your message.
- Reread your message to make sure that's really what you want to say.
- Click Send.
If you get an error message, you may need to configure your browser to read news.
To configure Netscape to read News
- Select "Edit" from the Menu bar at the top of the browser.
- Select "Preferences..."
- Select "Mail & Newsgroups"
- Select "Newsgroup Servers
- Click "Add..."
- In the space for "Server," type: news.lawrence.edu
- Click OK.
- Try the URL again.
