Lawrence University

TIME AND TRADITIONS: 1870s

1874 A world of music

A collegiate-level music program develops from the Preparatory Program that was established when Lawrence began.

1876 The Spoon and Spade

Intended as an award for the homeliest man on campus, the spoon is instead given
to the most outstanding man in the junior class. Senior men vote for the recipient of the
award, which is presented at Honors Day. Beginning in 1880, a companion award for
women, the spade, is presented to the most outstanding junior women, by vote of the
senior women. Both traditions continue until 1971.
