I'm a Professor Emeritus of Music of Lawrence University and former Head of the Voice Department of the Conservatory of Music there. I continue to lecture and write on operatic and vocal subjects and am an active critic, reviewing about forty opera productions each season for European and American magazines.
I owe a great deal of my interest in song to several of my professors at Indiana University. Though both are now deceased, I would like to acknowledge here the remarkable singer and voice teacher Marko Rothmüller, 1908-1993, (Professor of Music, Indiana University, 1955-1979), and the venerable teacher and song coach Frank St. Leger, 1890-1969, (Professor of Music, Indiana University, 1953-1968).
