1866 His Honor Judge Downer

Judge Jason Downer, associate justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and a man interested in securing higher educational opportunities for women, becomes president of the board of trustees of Wisconsin Female College. Upon his death in 1883, the judge bequeaths a large amount of money to the college, which is renamed Downer College in 1889.
