Journey Inward is a collection of nine character pieces for the piano. It is the combination and reworking of two earlier works for piano. New music was composed during this process as well. One section not used here became the source of the variations for piano, Light Escaping. As in much of my music, the overall musical form makes use of a mirror. In this example, the center of the set is the Elegy. However, this is overshadowed by the concluding Into the Night, which distorts the balance and tips the mirror. Hopefully this distortion will create an unsettling effect on the listener.
