Light Escaping emerged from an earlier piano work, Journey Inward. Originally, the current Demonic Dance in Part II  was a contrasting section within the first movement of Journey Inward.  When reworking it, I kept thinking of alternate versions.  Instead of using any of them, the decision was made to keep them all and start a new composition.  The harmonic progression of the Demonic Dance has been sustained in the surrounding variations, although sometimes elaborated and augmented. After the sound world is established in the Prelude, Part I is organized in a mirror fashion.  Following the Interlude, Part II makes a push straight through to the Demonic Dance.  The Postlude concludes the variations with the most stark presentation of the compositional material, reduced to it's skeletal bones. The use of a prelude, interlude and a postlude helps to pace the work, and provides a means of integration between Parts I and II.
